national tour every three to four years, a chance for many orchestra
students to broaden their horizons! Wrapping Paper This sale is one of our big fundraisers, the proceeds of which go to
the students' individual accounts. Please join this worthy cause by
helping students sell to your co-workers, relatives, and neighbors --
starting right away. Your student already received a packet, but
more information will be available at the Open House. Poinsettias For Sale Need Christmas ideas? Have an office to decorate? The annual orches-
tra poinsettia sale can help you out and will help our funding. Order
forms for these holiday plants are in your Open House packet and more
are available if you need them! Rummage and Bake Sale On Oct. 16th at the Miller Community Center on Capital Hill we will
have a day of rummaging. Mary Sandstrom and Gerri Hashisaki are in
charge and encourage everyone to make donations of useful items. Volunteers will be needed to help out on the sale day, so please consider donating some time as well as bake sale items (cookies, brownies, whole pies, cakes, as well as individual servings of the same). Winter Waltz The Garfield Orchestra Winter Waltz is one of the most highly antici- pated events of the year! A glittering evening of music and dance will be held at the Westin Hotel on February 13th. The waltz is the main fundraiser for the orchestra's yearly operating expenses that include coaching, new music, instruments, concert fees, etc. Mark your year 2000 calendars now! Parent help will be needed, at least 80 people, including ticket sales, ticket-taking at the door, coat check, serving coffee and desserts, cashier, door guard, and supervising the student room. Please consider signing up now to be a part of this charming and memorable evening. Dinner at Machiavelli's The McElroy family, owners of the fabulous Machiavelli Restaurant, will once again will host an evening of fine dining for the benefit of the Garfield Orchestra. This year's dinner will be held at the Miller Community Center in the spring, on a date to be announced. Dinner will be about $15 per person and all proceeds will be donated to the orchestras Tour Fund for the trip planned to Japan in 2000. Gala Auction! In order to defray costs for the Japan Tour, we are holding an auction on the evening of April 7th in the beautiful Benaroya Hall Lobby. Procurement papers will be included in the Open House packet and we ask everyone's help with this, our major fund raising event for the tour. Please network to solicit useful items for sale and consider donating your own skills and talents as well. Then plan to attend -- bringing family and friends to enjoy students performing, fine Schwartz Brothers catering, and special items for sale. Company Matching Contributions Many employers will match their employees' gifts to charitable organizations. You may direct your contributions to the orchestra through the Alliance for Education, a 501 (c)(3) organization. Check with your employer for necessary forms. Please let your family and friends know also. Checks should be made out to the Alliance for Education (Garfield Orchestra). Red Balloon Sales Many, many thanks to Stan Sorcher for organizing students to help the Red Balloon Company sell balloons during the various summer festivals in Seattle. Stan did a wonderful job working with the students, and the students put in long hours to help raise money for their accounts. This was a good match and we hope perhaps we can do more such fund raising like this. FOGO Board Members
